Retail theft in the Czech Republic causes losses of over 8 billion Kč annually. Yet, the average store unnecessarily loses 1.5-3% of its revenue, money that could go towards profit or development. The good news: with a combination of appropriate measures, this figure can be reduced by 70-80%.
Where do thefts actually originate?
Before you start investing, it is important to understand the structure of losses:
- Theft by customers accounts for approximately 40% of total losses.
- Employee theft is surprisingly high: up to 35 %.
- Administrative errors (goods receipt, cashier errors) - 20 %
- Supplier frauds: remaining part
Most shops focus exclusively on customers. Yet internal theft is more systematic, harder to detect and causes higher average loss per incident.
Physical presence of an agent: the strongest deterrent
A visible guard or detective on the sales floor has an immediate impact on the number of theft attempts. Research confirms that the mere presence of an agent reduces theft by 30-50 % even before anyone is caught.
Uniformed guard vs. Civilian detective
A uniformed guard at the entrance serves as a deterrent, discouraging opportunistic thieves and giving customers a sense of security. Disadvantage: experienced repeat offenders can bypass them.
A civilian detective on the sales floor is more effective for detection. They blend in with other customers, can monitor suspicious individuals and catch thieves in the act, legally and with documentation.
The optimal combination depends on the size of the store and the nature of your product range. Jewellery shops and electronics require a different mix than supermarkets.
CCTV system: deterrence and evidence
Cameras serve two functions: they deter (when visible) and document (even when hidden). For retail premises, we recommend:
- Cameras covering every blind spot of the sales area
- Footage of the cash register, prevention of employee theft
- Camera at the entrance/exit with facial recording
- Minimum 30-day recording archive
Modern IP cameras with AI can automatically detect suspicious behaviour, prolonged loitering near tills, concealing goods under clothing or nervous movements. These alerts are sent in real time to the guard or to your mobile phone.
EAS systems: electronic article surveillance
Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) labels are standard in clothing and electronics but remain underestimated in other categories. RF labels cost units of Kč and can protect goods worth hundreds.
Key rules:
- Deactivators must be placed out of customers’ reach.
- Install gates so they cannot be bypassed (no gaps at the checkout).
- Regularly check system functionality
Staff training: the most cost-effective and efficient measure.
Trained staff is your best asset. Employees should:
- Greet every customer upon entry (psychologically deters theft).
- Recognising signs of suspicious behaviour without profiling
- Know how to contact security without confronting a thief.
- Understanding internal goods receipt protocols
Warning: never detain thieves without security backup. Physical confrontation by staff may result in injury and legal issues.
Putting it together: an ROI example
A retail outlet with monthly turnover of 800 000 Kč and a loss rate of 2.5% loses 20 000 Kč per month. After deployment:
| Measures | Monthly cost | Estimated savings |
|---|---|---|
| Civilian detective (4 days/week) | 8 000 Kč | 8 000 Kč |
| Camera system upgrade | 1 500 Kč | 4 000 Kč |
| EAS labels | 1 000 Kč | 3 000 Kč |
| Staff training (one-off) | 500 Kč | 2 000 Kč |
| Total | 11 000 Kč | 17 000 Kč |
Result: an additional 6 000 Kč net profit every month, and this is calculated conservatively.
What to watch out for when selecting shop security
- Agency insurance, in case of wrongful detention or damage
- Training on customer rights, what security guards are and are not permitted to do
- SLA contract, guaranteed presence during agreed hours
- Reporting: regular reporting of incidents, trends and recommendations
